The same government that won't let us have commercial drones or home DNA testing kits has made yet another brilliant regulatory decision. The U.S. Treasury's Alcohol and Tobacco Tax and Trade Bureau has just approved wait for it powdered alcohol.
A Bevlaw blogger first spotted the application, which approves seven different varieties of powdered alcohol. The blogger writes, "I am not astonished that this is a real product but I am absolutely astonished that this is approved. ... The person that pushed this through must be very patient or lucky." (Via Lehrman Beverage Law)
Powdered alcohol isn't a totally novel concept in 2007, food technology students in the Netherlands came up with Booz2Go, a just-add-water powder which could turn any drink into an alcohol. (Via YouTube / Diagonal Line)
The alcohol powder that will be coming to the States includes vodka and rum powders, along with powdered cocktails like Lemon Drop, Cosmopolitan, Mojito and Margarita. They're all going to be marketed under the brand ... *deep sigh* ... "Palcohol."

Gee, What could possibly go wrong with this new product?

(1,918 posts)None of sounds appetizing, but it's creative. Now we'll have people drinking rum instead of crystal light at work.

(13,091 posts)Can you imagine the uptick in alcohol poisoning incidents and deaths that will result from this product ?
Priorities, we must have priorities and hypocrisy.
Cannabis (we are told) is dangerous.
A war was declared against cannabis in the U.S. and around the globe.
This crime against humanity is slowly changing.

(38,958 posts)"interesting" situations developing on college campuses which as recently noted by President Carter in his latest book have more than a few issues. Well, that was the first thing that came to mind.
I just don't think this is a particularly good idea, but it might just be my thinking.

(7,672 posts)situations here as well. Already a ban on outside drink containers of any kind because of the alcohol spiking going on.
Now they can take their HuMan drinks in the cafeteria and sprinkle their way to drunkenness!
Yeah, nothing can go wrong here...

(12,233 posts)airline industry who need to conserve space and trash and from people grabbing the mini-bottles from the cart... Also, the kids at prom spiking their drinks (much easier to carry in a pouch of powdered alchohol and pour into one's drinks in the bathroom). It could also make "dry" family dinners with extended family (like Thanksgiving and such) more enjoyable if you can spike your drink a bit and maybe ignore your racist Uncle Harry... LOL.
However, I can also see this being a big time negative for date rape incidents (spiking the drinks of the date you are with so they are unaware of how much alcohol they may be consuming - and its not a roofie that they would have to seek out and buy).

(1,074 posts)Maybe fiction comes to life from the Doris Day/Rock Hudson "Lover Come Back," an alcohol laden VIP (looks like a Necco wafer) triple the alcohol content of a martini. See the liquor industry can make dreams come true, it's all in the money.
How's the decriminalization and legalization of cannabis for personal use going nationwide? And how about the liquor industry's timing here.

Yes, alcohol poisonings will be going up dramatically.
The PTB love anything that will decrease the population of the "losers" in their game of monopoly.

That was certainly a thought that came to mind when I posted the OP. I see many downsides to this and very, very few upsides.

(2,083 posts)I'm excited to try it out. As for safety, it's not like they're going to be selling bulk containers of the stuff like Gatorade.

Yes it's not a far reach to get it in the hands of minors, but is that really any different from the way it's always been?
