Jamie Dimon: Let's 'lift up' Americans hurt by free trade

by Matt Egan

Free trade has taken a beating this election season, from the left and the right. But Jamie Dimon believes it would be a mistake to run away from trade deals.

Instead, the JPMorgan Chase (JPM) CEO argues the U.S. needs to figure out a way to help Americans who are hurt by trade deals.

"We shouldn't hold back the progress from trade and technology. But it's fair to lift up the people that were hurt by it, as opposed to killing the golden goose," Dimon told CNNMoney's Poppy Harlow in an exclusive interview in Detroit.

Dimon said "trade has been hugely beneficial" to 99% of the people, but not everyone. His comments allude to the ongoing debate over how many jobs have been created and destroyed by controversial trade deals like NAFTA.

The Wall Street exec said there needs to be "really powerful trade assistance" for the roughly 1% of Americans he estimates are hurt by trade. The help could come in the form of income assistance, relocation and business redevelopment programs.

What's he proposing? Help by giving tax cuts to the "job creators"? Loans or other debt based "incentives"? Education or "retraining" (at a cost thank you).

He's only worried because people are sick of his games. Him flicking a few crumbs down to the masses is all it takes, right Jamie?!

that his only idea for the 99% is to expand the EITC. Well, that shows he realizes wages are in the dumper and because none of his plutocrat buddies think we're worth even that miserly 7 bucks plus an hour, he wants the government to subsidize it for them.

He is also pointing the finger at Democrats for "pork projects," neglecting the worst of them, the military pork, sponsored mostly by Republicans. He clearly needs to get out more.

Nowhere in his little wounded speech is support for a living minimum wage, subsidized or single payer health insurance, free state higher education, subsidized day care, or a thousand other things that woulld actually help people. that EITC? Not so much, although it would be a boon to cheap labor conservatives like the Wal Mart folks.

The only legitimate thing I heard when I listened is that Sanders genuinely has all of them feeling a little rattled. They'll get over it right after the election, when either Trump or Clinton is installed and they don't care which.

How the hell would he know that? I seriously doubt he's actually met someone not of the 1 or .1% who wasn't serving him in decades.

Well I'm one of those that does know quite a few people who have been hurt by "Free Trade" and I'm here in Oregon, one of those Pacific states that is supposed to be benefiting from this crap.
