Can someone clarify this?

As I understand, the IRS has 26 months to conclude an audit. During the 2016 campaign the orange fascist claimed he could not release his taxes because he was under audit. That I would assume, would be the taxes due April 2016. If you extend that date by 26 months, that would bring you to June 2018. The excuse has expired.

Have I got my facts correct?

Down on the Census question, though! That should make you smile.

New York released Trump taxes, Congress now suing to get them.

is a audit. They even say it doesn't matter but yet they are totally powerless to do a damn thing. It seems like we already have a ditatatorshit.

Easy enough to do. Just provide notice of audit letter sent by IRS to taxpayer when taxpayer is under audit. Trump is a liar

4. He could have released his returns any time, whether under audit or not. It was more trump BS.

Odds are he didn't want to show how little he made, and/or how little he paid in taxes.

5. The fault here is with the laws, not with the grifter.

Ours is one of the few developed countries that does not require full financial disclosures from candidates to high office (even many 3rd world countries require it).

As you know, they're only required to file an unaudited, perfunctory disclosure using ballpark figures of their own choosing. A total fig leaf.

If the laws don't require candidates to submit, say, 7 years of federal returns, what's to stop a con man like Cheeto from taking full advantage of the loophole!

His only real risk was voter disapproval - which he cleverly defused with the "audit" bullshit.

That was a lie, along with everything else. There is no law that bars him from releasing his tax returns because they are under audit.

since I was enrolled to practice before the IRS, back in the 1980's, but I don't remember any limitation on the duration of the audit process. Even if there was, there would be appeals processes that could stretch things out way beyond that, including paying the tax assessed and going to Federal court for a refund of it. That could take years, especially if the Federal appeals process was followed to the very end.

In any case, it was a bullshit reason, and Trump is never going to release his tax returns. They will have to be forced out of parties who they've been supplied to, if we're ever going to see them at all.
