Ningbo: Global supply fears as China partly shuts major port (BBC)

Ningbo: Global supply fears as China partly shuts major port
August 13, 2021 BBC Business News

The partial closure of one of China's biggest cargo ports due to coronavirus has raised fresh concerns about the impact on global trade. Services were shut on Wednesday at a terminal at Ningbo-Zhoushan port after a worker was infected with the Delta variant of Covid-19.

Ningbo-Zhoushan in eastern China is the world's third-busiest cargo port.
The closure threatens more disruption to supply chains ahead of the key Christmas shopping season. Closing the terminal on Meishan island until further notice will cut the port's capacity for container cargo by about a quarter.

It comes as the cost of shipping from China and South East Asia to the East coast of the US has already hit a record high, according to the Freightos Baltic global container freight index.
And some UK businesses were already feeling the pressure of much higher shipping costs.

the variations of the COVID virus still run wild across the global economy. My advice to all (though I think most of us here on DU are ahead of the ballgame, have already stocked up on the goodies one needs) is to stock up on those critical items you will want, may suffer some component shortages even if the item itself is okay, inventory-wise.

Manufacturers making replacements for needed items may suffer iffy supply lines, perhaps. Also, when I went into my local Walgreen's, I was amazing at how many shelves (and items) were empty, and reduced inventory numbers. Of course, don't go buy 1000 widgets etc. but stock up over time, build up your inventory slowly, after all, you'll have to get rid of the inventory/use it over time...
