(43,116 posts)Saw it once when it came out, didn't recall hardly any of it. It was a very good film for the times, but it's now rather dated. The plot surrounding a generic labor vs. cutthroat capitalist theme that seems naive today, though it was a revelation in the 1980s. Also dated were the green computer CRTs, the trading rooms and suits. Even the escort, who is listed in the credits as a "hooker" would not be recognized in that role today - she was dressed in a black business suit with a knee-length skirt. Michael Douglas was great, as was Martin Sheen. It was hard to find any of the lesser cast, a few of whom appeared under their own names, I guess as NYC institutions.
Saying this because the world has changed so much. Insider trading now routine, the system seems more tolerant of what is de facto corruption even in the face of regulation. They've legalized a giant vacuum that siphons the dollars directly up the class ladder and into the hands of the business gods - the job creators - who play with it so they can lobby for lower taxes on themselves.
Gordon Gecko tells us "Greed is good". Maybe a little greed is good, if it's used for self-preservation.
