Samsung chooses Texas as site of new $17bn chip plant

24 November 2021

Samsung has chosen a site close to the city of Taylor in Texas for its new $17bn (£12.7bn) computer chip plant, amid a global shortage of semiconductors.

It is the South Korean electronics giant's biggest-ever US investment.

The plant is expected to create 2,000 technology industry jobs, with construction starting early next year.

Samsung, like several of its rivals, is racing to expand chip making in the US to tackle supply chain issues.

"With greater manufacturing capacity, we will be able to better serve the needs of our customers and contribute to the stability of the global semiconductor supply chain," Kinam Kim, chief executive of Samsung electronics device solutions said.

The plant is expected to be operational by the second half of 2024.

I have a refrigerator and it is crap. Ice maker constantly freezes over causing a humming sound which we have to unplug the frig, use a blow dryer to defrost the ice maker every other week.

Never will I buy their products ever again and this move to Texas seals the deal.

I hope the failed power grids destroys their profits.

A number of times. It currently broken and we are just buying ice. We had a television that was nothing but problems as well. We have since replaced it with another brand.

I will never buy this brand of anything, and as you stated the move just seals the deal.

That I use mostly on weekends to make ice that I bag for the week. We finally figured out the fix by watching a you tube video.

I’m definitely going to order the kit to fix mine. And actually fix it. I have the upgraded board already because surprise, it went out and had to be replaced.
