Migrant crisis prompts rail traffic embargo on U.S.-Mexico border, UP says

Union Pacific Railroad yesterday informed customers that the U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) agency halted train traffic into Mexico at the Eagle Pass gateway due to the growing migrant crisis on the southern U.S.-Mexico border. ... UP's other gateways cannot handle the extra traffic, so the Class I notified customers of the temporary embargo at Eagle Pass.

"This will help us better manage your shipments during this dynamic and rapidly developing situation," UP informed customers. "We remain in communication with CBP and will continue normal operations at our other gateways."

The influx of migrants prompted Eagle Pass Mayor Rolando Salinas to issue emergency declaration, citing "severe undocumented immigrant surge," Reuters reported.

The situation is expected to continue for seven days from Tuesday, according to the city's official account on social media platform X, formerly Twitter, the news agency said.
