Pacifica Hires Union-Busting Law Firm
The liberal Pacifica Foundation (parent of lefty radio stations like KPFA, in Berkeley, WBAI, in New York, and KPFK, in Los Angeles) has hired Jackson Lewis, a notorious anti-union law firm, according to Cal Labor Fed. The law firm, which the AFL-CIO has called Americas number one union-buster, advises bosses how to obstruct their employees from forming unions and how to undermine existing unions. They not only hold seminars to teach bosses how to maintain union free environments, they also advise employers on how to subvert the Americans with Disabilities Act.
KPFAs employees, who are members of Communications Workers of America (CWA) Local 9415, voted to demand that Pacificas National Board terminate its contract with Jackson Lewis. The board responded by symbolically flipping them the finger, choosing to leave their contract with Jackson Lewis intact.
Just a few years ago, Pacifica spent thousands of listeners donation dollars on a union-busting consultant to bust the KPFA union. They hired armed guards, fired many popular broadcasters, and eventually locked out the entire staff and temporarily shut down the station, enraging the stations listeners.
The piece in Cal Labor Fed is asking for union members to seek a resolution by their unions condemning Pacificas hire of one of the countrys top union-busters. They are also asking individuals to sign this petition demanding that Pacifica drop Jackson Lewis immediately.

(7 posts)The total so far, just at KPFA, has been over $100,000 in listener money to anti-union consultants. Its a sad commentary on what Pacifica has become.
Thousands of Pacifica listeners have written and called network management asking for change, only to be ignored. The pending recall vote on Pacifica National Board treasurer Tracy Rosenberg, who has repeatedly attacked KPFAs workers and their union, is a case in point.
Elections at all 5 Pacifica stations are coming up this fall. Lets be sure and elect people who take seriously Pacificas mission of peace and social justice. Please circulate news on Pacifica to your friends and family in the 5 station listening areas: Berkeley, Los Angeles, Washington DC, New York City and Houston.

(7 posts)There is a virtual gag rule at KPFA right now, so you won't hear much -- if any -- of this on the airwaves. Even the news reporters are harassed when they try to cover stories having to do with Pacifica's actions.
A couple of examples:

So please do let fellow listeners know about the situation.

(7 posts)On Wednesday, April 18, listeners joined KPFAs paid and unpaid staff for a spirited picket of the stations parent organization, Pacifica Radio, to raise their voices against the networks hiring of infamous anti-union law firm, Jackson Lewis.
The firm was hired on a retainer for general labor and employment issues for the Pacifica network at the urging of executive director Arlene Engelhardt. The AFL-CIO calls the firm the nations number one union-buster.
Tina Bachemin, KPFA news reporter and unpaid staff member, addressed the picketers with a statement of solidarity. I see this issue as part of the bitter struggle thats going on now across America to smash unionism and wage war against workers, she told the crowd. Whether its an attempt to take away collective bargaining rights of the public workers in Wisconsin or an attempt to block SEIU janitors and maids from organizing in San Francisco hotels, this issue of whether a law firm with a reputation for union busting should represent Pacifica is part of that same struggle.
Over 1700 listeners and staff have signed a petition telling Pacifica to ditch Jackson Lewis. KPFAs Local Station Board has passed a resolution unanimously calling on Pacifica to drop the firm.
Other speakers included labor journalist Steve Early, KPFA news staffer and CWA member Brian Edwards-Tiekert, and CWA District 9 organizer Libby Sayre. Members from a range of unions turned out to support KPFAs paid staff, including from the Industrial Workers of the World (IWW), the International Longshore and Warehouse Union, (ILWU), the National Union of Health Care Workers (NUHW), the Pacific Media Workers Guild/CWA, the Service Employees International Union (SEIU), and University Professional & Technical Employees (UPTE).
KPFAs paid workers are represented by Communications Workers of America Local 9415.

(7 posts)At its recorded phone meeting April 12, the Pacifica National Board (PNB) devoted a full 45 minutes to discussing emails it is receiving from KPFA members opposed to Pacifica Radio's hire of union-busting law firm, Jackson Lewis. Sadly, this conversation did not involve any re-thinking of the decision to hire the union-busting lawyers.
Instead, PNB members debated whether or not to block the hundreds of protest emails its getting from listeners supporting SaveKPFA. PNB member Ken Aaron (KPFK/Los Angeles) said he thinks the people writing to the board are not human and their communications were spam that should be prevented from reaching the board. From SaveKPFAs website, people have a choice of sending their email directly to the PNBs address, or sending it via a web form, which is then forwarded by SaveKPFAs web volunteers. | LISTEN to 30 second audio clip of Aaron
Several PNB members said they were appalled at the proposed limitations on listener comments. SaveKPFA member Andrea Turner, who is 1 of 4 KPFA delegates on the PNB, thanked listeners for writing and said she hoped they would continue doing so. Turner pointed out that a member-driven non-profit founded to advance free expression shouldnt be scared of hearing from its own constituents. | LISTEN to 1 minute audio clip of Turner
Efforts to block or divert emails sent through SaveKPFAs webpage failed by a one-vote margin, with these 9 members VOTING NO on the motion: Nia Bediako (WBAI/NYC), Wesley Bethune (KPFT/Houston), Lydia Brazon (KPFK/LA), Revalyn Golde (WPFW/Washington), Campbell Johnson (WPFW, Washington), Laura Prives (KPFA/Berkeley), Marcel Reid (WPFW, Washington), Dan Siegel (KPFA/Berkeley), and Andrea Turner (KPFA/Berkeley).
PNB treasurer Tracy Rosenberg, who is facing a recall from her constituents at KPFA, VOTED YES to blocking incoming listener messages. She was joined by 7 other PNB members: Ivon Alcime (WPFW/Washington), Teresa Allen (KPFT/Houston), Ken Aaron (KPFK/LA), Carolyn Birden (WBAI/NYC), Bill Crosier (KPFT/Houston), Ali Lexa (KPFK/LA), and George Reiter (KPFT/Houston).
Earlier in the same meeting, PNB chair Summer Reese complained about KPFA listeners making a lot of noise regarding the election supervisor she hired for the Tracy Rosenberg recall vote. Hundreds of listeners have been writing the PNB to ask why recall ballots had still not been mailed nearly four months after Pacificas own deadline for that to happen.
Over 1200 listeners have signed a petition demanding Pacifica appoint an impartial election supervisor from the American Association of Arbitrators or a similar organization. As we reported in our last issue, Reese recently hired a person named Matt Ward to supervise the recall, but gave no information about him. Multiple efforts by SaveKPFA activists to ask both Reese and Ward himself about his experience, or his timeline for the election, did not produce answers. Reese told the PNB that because Pacifica had previously hired election supervisors who she said dont appear to have had any qualifications to be election supervisors, it was therefore inappropriate for KPFA listeners to ask about the qualifications of the person she hired to oversee the Rosenberg recall. | LISTEN TO 2 min audio clip of Reese
You can hear the entire PNB meeting in this three-part public recording: Part 1 | Part 2 | Part 3. (The discussion of the recall and KPFAs listener emails begins about 8 minutes into part 2 and continues through the vote at the end of part 3).
KPFA listeners and staff have the right to know how the radio network they support is run and what our donations are paying for, said KPFA board chair Margy Wilkinson. Lets keep speaking up loudly and clearly, until we get our station and network back on the right track.
