Flying solo tomorrow
Going into a meeting as a Steward with a Union Member and Management for the first time.
Not the Manager.
Or the Manager's Manager.
But the Manager's Manager's Manager.
Member wants an Administrative Transfer, which the contract allows, but which Management has to approve and agree to. We're meeting alone before the meeting. If the Member wants me there, then I will be there. However, I am going to feel out whether she would be comfortable going into the meeting alone, with me. I worry that my presence may kill the Transfer.
I guess if this was stuff was easy, people would be lined up to become Stewards.

(1,005 posts)consider that management is used to seeing union leadership representing and assisting members in a variety of ways. The members pay dues to have help and guidance from union leadership. And, besides offering some moral support for her, this may offer you a personal experience that may help you to be a better steward.
I sincerely wish you both the best of luck and let us know what you decide and how the member fairs on her request.

(14,578 posts)For me, it went well in that I was able to exert some control, redirect the conversation, guide the meeting, and I think keep the member calm. At one point, she looked over at me, so I knew she was uncomfortable answering. I was able to step in and respond.
On the Transfer request, it was a bust. Member stayed calm during the meeting, but afterward was very upset and even broke down in tears. I reassured her, and we talked about various options of applying for other jobs, outside the agency, and even outside of state government.
In talking with another Steward, he gave me some ideas to follow up with on the Transfer request. We are both thinking it will be a bust, but it will give the member some encourage and a sense of empowerment.

(1,005 posts)Sorry it didn't work out for her this time. But it sounds to me, a 33 year union guy who's done a lot of these kinds of things, that you did very well on your first solo.
