Steelworkers union, Asarco clash over pay, benefits

AMARILLO -- The United Steelworkers Union and some of the Asarco workers it represents raised their voices Tuesday by holding a rally as labor negotiations continue to drag on more than two years after the last contract expired.

The company is also upping the ante by saying it will implement its “last, best and final offer” over the objections of the union.

“We never agreed to it, No. 1, and a complaint issued by the (National Labor Relations Board) against Asarco makes it illegal to implement,” said union spokesman Manny Armenta. “It’s crazy. They agreed to meet with us on Dec. 14 but they’re saying they’re going to implement this.”

There was no response from an Asarco spokesman after a request for comment.
