It's a stock and investing news site with a number of very good dividend investing writers. I have done well following Rida Morwa. (This is now a paid subscription - it was free in the past, but still well worth it.

We are likely coming into a time of market weakness in June, so I'd wait before starting a big portfolio. Gives you good time to do the research.

I am making about $200/month on a much smaller portfolio, so $400 should be no problem.

So, if you invested in a mutual fund like putnam, $400 a month would be 6 percent withdrawal rate. A little higher than the 5 percent that is usually safe.

We did this with my mom's money for many years.

Just have to watch for a 2008 type crash.

Yes, it goes up and it goes down but the long term trend is up. If you really do think there will be a downturn in the near future, just don't invest everything all at once. And if there is a downturn, don't start selling. That big hit we had last March simply didn't last that long. I know that any number of people here decided that when Trump was elected the market would surely crash and they sold everything. And missed out on good returns.

Another thing to look at would be investing in stocks that pay dividends.
