But I'm in a big school and we keep them busy. If another sub from the sub list isn't available, we do it on our preps. We do get paid but it's a pain to lose planning/grading time to babysit for someone else.

Some are part-timers and pick up jobs.

On the other hand, the district asks teachers to sub (for pay) during their conference period, so we know when there's a shortage. I filled in 3 days last week.

At times we've been asked to divide classes and house an addition 12-15 students to avoid needing a sub for that class, and it has not always been for the same subject.

We still have a bit of a teacher shortage. It took 7 weeks to find a new world history teacher. (And she didn't last a week.)

The full-time teachers are also stressed, between new rules and unruly kids or kids with knowledge gaps and aren't picking up the extra hours around campus. Detention, regular tutoring, the "graduation academy" for 18-year-old sophomores, homebound students.
