The superintendent of a school in the US state of Virginia has lost his job after a six-year-old pupil shot and wounded a teacher earlier this month.
The school board decided by a vote of 5-to-1 to terminate George Parker only hours after a lawyer for the teacher announced plans to sue the district.
Abigail Zwerner, 25, was released from hospital last week after being shot in the chest in her classroom.
Her lawyer said on Wednesday the shooting was "entirely preventable".
Police have not announced any charges.

(CNN) — A school board voted Wednesday evening to oust its superintendent, weeks after a 6-year-old allegedly shot a teacher in one of the district’s schools and on the same day that the teacher’s lawyer said school administrators were warned that the child had a gun the day of the shooting.
The Newport News Public Schools school board voted 5-1 in favor of a separation agreement and severance with Superintendent Dr. George Parker III.
The teacher’s lawyer alleged earlier Wednesday that school administrators had multiple warnings about the boy the day of the incident.
“Over the course of a few hours, three different times – three times – school administration was warned by concerned teachers and employees that the boy had a gun on him at the school and was threatening people,” Diane Toscano, an attorney for the teacher, Abby Zwerner, told reporters in a news conference Wednesday. “But the administration could not be bothered.”

That specific school's administration is responsible. The superintendent is not the first person who had knowledge of this student, his specific situation and the school. The school administrators should be fired. They are the one who had the direct responsibility. The superintendent is a scapegoat. I taught 1st grade for 15+ years and when I had severe behavior issues, and there were TONS in the regular, highly populated classroom every single year. I complained, spent hours each day documenting cases and filed paperwork, arranged meetings with the proper channels, crossed my "t" and dotted my "i" and rarely were any cases handled in a timely manner and in accordance with all of the district's requirements for Spec Ed students. People on the outside have no idea what it is like for teachers every, fucking day. This is on top of the regular 10 hour day. Poor pay, no respect and BS like this is the reason you can't hire new teachers. There is hardly any real, meaningful support in many, many cases.
