(12,233 posts)My son has been bringing home books that are non-fiction. The library doesn't have a lot of non-fiction books for children K-3 because getting children excited about reading and learning words is more important than having them read "real-world" crap. They have enough time for that. Besides imagination spurns creativity and ingenuity. Imagination is what makes it possible for people to go into space or even create the question for discovering the "how to?" of many things that have given us the technology we utilize today.
So, anyway, this school lacks the books for non-fiction.. except for 1 main area and that is books about the military branches of service (most likely a freebie by the military to indoctrinate our children early on). Its ridiculous. So, we read lots of books and I make him write in a journal to help the creative side. I'm sure most teachers having to deal with this new non-fiction bs are just as pissed off about it as I am. Why in the world would any teacher or parent want to completely bore children with non-fiction real world droves at the very point where they are first learning to read and learning to spell and learning to sound out words. If the story is non-fiction drivel, where is the drive to pull them into a book... Where are the fantastic illustrations to go along with the story that keeps the children struggling through sounding out a new word to see where their story is taking them?
I do NOT like this bs mandate. Watch reading scores go down because of this bs of non-fiction, real world reading exercises dreamed up by corporate hacks who want non-thinking working drones to keep educated only enough to slug off to shitty jobs, for shitty wages. Their imaginations and creative bug never developed to dream of a life of equality and freedoms for all people.

(96,793 posts)I teach special ed so my kids are reluctant readers. And I will attest that nothing gets a little boy more interested in reading than a book about snakes. Or bugs.
