The juvenile dolphin that became stranded on Grand Isle last fall was released into Barataria Bay last week, after a months-long rehabilitation effort by local and national wildlife organizations. The dolphin, nicknamed "Octavius" after the veterinarian who cared for him, is the first to be rescued, rehabilitated and released back into the wild off Louisiana's coast, according to the Audubon Nature Institute.

"This is a truly notable event," said Mandy Tumlin, the Louisiana state stranding coordinator for marine mammals and sea turtles. "Dolphins can be deemed non-releasable for a variety of reasons, such as a medical condition that may hinder their ability to survive."

Biologists with the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries responded to reports of the stranded 6 1/2-foot-long dolphin on Oct. 26. They found it responsive and suspected it had likely become stranded after enduring high water and rough seas during Hurricane Patricia.
