The world is on track to exceed 1.5C of warming unless countries rapidly implement far-reaching actions to reduce carbon emissions, according to a draft UN report leaked to Reuters.
The final draft report from the UNs intergovernmental panel on climate change (IPCC) was due for publication in October. It is the guiding scientific document for what countries must do to combat climate change.
Human-induced warming would exceed 1.5C by about 2040 if emissions continued at their present rate, the report found, but countries could keep warming below that level if they made rapid and far-reaching changes.
Under the 2015 Paris climate agreement, almost 200 countries signed up to limit global temperature rises to well below 2C above pre-industrial levels and to pursue efforts to limit the temperature increase to 1.5C.
Climate scientist and Climate Analytics director Bill Hare said the draft report showed with greater clarity how much faster countries needed to move towards decarbonisation under various temperature situations and that the impacts of climate change greatly increased between 1.5C and 2C of warming.

(180 posts)Putin sees global warming as a plus for Russia. The arctic becomes the Russian Mediterranean. Delusional I agree but for Putin a two degree rise in average temps opens much of his country for development while distributing costs to his enemies.

(38,303 posts)The way Russia sees it now, the U.S.A. will be on their side when it comes to exploiting Arctic resources, and Canada and Northern Europe will be on the other.
If you look at a map of the Arctic, that pie is divided nearly in half.
In the U.S.A. and Russia profits will go to the robber barons, and there will be few environmental safeguards.
In Canada and Northern Europe, a portion of the profits collected by taxes and fees will go to social improvements, and there will be stricter environmental safeguards.
If the U.S.A. chooses to side with the Canadian or Northern European social democratic model, then Russia will have trouble selling its "dirtier" fossil fuels and other natural resources. Other than weakening the U.S.A. in general, that's why Russia supports the Republican party. The Republican party thinks global warming will be a good thing, and they support free-for-robber-baron exploitation of Arctic resources.
