DeSantis Proposes A Whole $6 Million In New Budget To Help Municipalities Fight Rising Seas

Which is, what, enough for a few hundred yards of seawall?

EDIT

DeSantis also is seeking more than $625 million for Everglades restoration and a host of water projects, including efforts to ease algal blooms and red tides that have fouled Atlantic and Gulf coasts and beaches.

While the governor also has drawn attention for appointing a chief science officer and chief resilience officer devoted to combating climate change, his premiere budget feature appears to be a modest, $6 million grant program for local governments battling sea level rise. “The governor’s recommended budget includes funding for many important environmental programs and initiatives,” said Aliki Moncrief, executive director of Florida Conservation Voters. “Unfortunately, the challenges of our state are dire, and this budget does not go far enough to meet our needs.”

DeSantis also wants to use a portion of the state’s $166 million share of a national settlement with Volkswagen — caught cheating federal emissions standards — to make more electric buses and charging stations available in Florida communities.

Unlike his predecessor, now-U.S. Sen. Rick Scott, DeSantis does show an interest in addressing climate change issues. But the governor’s budget proposal steers clear of promoting any new limits on greenhouse gases by government or industrial-users, steps sought by many environmental groups. In what has become an annual, unfilled ask by conservationists, the $300 million they seek for the state’s Florida Forever land-buying program is limited to $100 million in DeSantis’s blueprint.

According to Drying Up by John Dunn, Florida (especially since Rick Scott happened) has a history of lowballing money for serious combatting of global warming. Billions, not millions, will be needed if they are seriously going to "fight" rising seas. "Go Big or Go Extinct" or better yet, Move.

to speed that process up. God or bad, Gov DeSantis is at least trying to do something, even if not enough, its better than nothing. Florida agri-business is root cause for so much of issues in florida like red tide, so that fight will be tough to win with GOP in control,
