Ed. - That 57 million figure? That's just commercial storage, not counting that on farms.
The destruction from the Aug. 10 derecho storm compounded troubles for a U.S. agricultural economy already battered by extreme weather, the U.S.-China trade war and disruptions to labor and food consumption from the COVID-19 pandemic. Its amazing, its big, Trump told local and federal officials at a briefing about the damage, a day after approving disaster aid for the state.
The storm packed hurricane-force winds that crumpled steel storage bins, flattened corn fields, caused widespread damage in towns and left thousands of people without power. Crop losses come as China needs to import more corn to meet rising demand to feed livestock. Officials said Iowa, the top U.S. corn-producing state, could fill orders from China and elsewhere with reserves.
There are millions of acres of corn that just wont flat out be able to be harvested, Mike Naig, Iowas agriculture secretary, said at the briefing in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. The U.S. Department of Agriculture last week estimated the storm affected about 37.7 million acres across the Midwest, including 14 million in Iowa.
It destroyed or seriously damaged more than 57 million bushels of commercial grain storage capacity in Iowa and a similar amount on farms, according to the states agriculture department. Farmers may struggle to store their crops as a result. The cost to remove, replace or repair damaged grain bins will top $300 million, according to Iowas agriculture department. Farmers in the state harvested 2.6 billion bushels of corn and 502 million bushels of soybeans last year.

(3,085 posts)That storm was the most insane weather I've ever witnessed here in Iowa. Usually when a big storm comes through we'd have 40 to 60mph wind gusts for maybe 10 minutes as the front passed. This had sustained winds of 60+ with gusts of 100+ for 45 minutes. Trees were and still are down every where. It was like a 50mile wide F1 tornado. Our Governor, Covid Kim Reynolds, however is more concerned with kissing Trump's ass than helping Iowans

(9,263 posts)we got hit with 50-60mph winds in central illinois from that storm and played havoc for a couple days of tree clean up. Then again we have rapid response when needed too, unlike Iowa.
