90,000 Evacuated In Irvine As Silverado Fire Hits 7,200 Acres; 2 Firefighters Critically Injured
The wind-driven Silverado fire that ignited Monday, Oct. 26 near Silverado Canyon left two firefighters critically burned and forced more than 90,000 Irvine residents to evacuate.
By late Monday, the blaze had burned through 7,200 acres as the Santa Ana winds continued to push flames toward homes.
More than 500 firefighters were working to quell the blaze, which was sending smoke and ash across Southern California. The blaze, dubbed the Silverado fire, was first reported at 10 acres just before 7 a.m. Soon after, came the first round of mandatory evacuations, in Orchard Hills, affecting about 60,000 residents in the community east of Irvine. By nightfall, 90,800 had been forced to evacuate.
There was no containment on the fire by evening, fire officials said. Containment is the percentage of the fire perimeter where flames are not expected to jump hand-cut lines or natural barriers such as rivers or roads. So far, authorities have not reported that any structure had been destroyed.
