Will New Zealand come under fire from the United States' soon-to-be climate envoy John Kerry for not doing enough on climate? Marc Daalder reports.
American President-elect Joe Biden has announced he will create a new, Cabinet-level climate envoy position after his inauguration on January 20. His pick for the role is John Kerry, a former senator and Secretary of State who negotiated the Paris Agreement and has only become more passionate about climate change over four years of the Trump administration.
Kerry will be tasked with representing the United States in future climate negotiations and with raising global ambition to reduce emissions.
America will soon have a government that treats the climate crisis as the urgent national security threat it is, Kerry said.
The appointment has been met with mixed reactions from stakeholders in the United States. Some were ecstatic that a person of Kerry's stature will be dedicated solely to climate diplomacy, while others were critical of a perceived establishment pick who may not push for the radical change needed to reduce emissions in line with limiting warming to 1.5 degrees above pre-industrial levels.
