New Technology Captures Carbon To Create Cement

Cement production makes up eight percent of man-made carbon emissions. But a new technology developed by the University of California, Los Angeles might change that.

Iman Mehdipour, UCLA project scientist in the Department of Civil Engineering, was part of a team that developed CO2Concrete. That technology uses flue gas from power plants to make cement, which is the biggest component in concrete.

"We utilize the carbon dioxide permanently and directly. We converted the carbon dioxide into some solid minerals. We inject it into the construction materials," he said. "We were able to reduce the cement."

The team tested their technique at the Integrated Test Center in Gillette {Wyoming}.

I wonder if the same thing could be done with asphalt? A LOT of miles of roads put down every year.

I read about it at least ten years ago like so many great ideas it still needs someone to implement it. We have solutions to fix many problems in society but not the political will.

...based on a similar technology some years ago. I attended one of his lectures with my son, then a high school student considering a career in materials science engineering, on precisely this topic. My son is now a materials science graduate student, so it's been around for a while.

unless you show them how it will make them more profitable, give them the money to upgrade, and do the work for them.
