President Joe Biden will step into the global climate spotlight on Thursday, aiming to portray the U.S. as ready to take the lead in the international campaign to curb the pollution that's warming the planet, driving devastating storms and raising sea levels.
The two-day Climate Leaders Summit represents the return of the U.S. to the climate diplomacy it abandoned under President Donald Trump, and Biden is eager to demonstrate his resolve by laying out an aggressive set of targets that will move the country closer to the goals set by the European Union and try to set the pace for nations like China and India to follow.
Officials close to the Biden team say the administration is planning to pledge to reduce the nation's heat-trapping greenhouse gas emissions by about 50 percent from 2005 levels by 2030 a figure that one person with direct knowledge said climate envot John Kerry's team shared with Chinese officials during the last-minute trip he took to Shanghai last week.
Any lesser target would thwart momentum, according to environmental activists, experts and veterans of global climate diplomacy. Even a range of cuts that includes reductions that are less than 50 percent, as the White House is considering, could spell trouble both domestically and internationally for Bidens agenda.

(6,813 posts)It has been since before the QOP denied Al Gore his presidency. Security, economics, politics: all these aspects are destined for improvement for whomever picks up the ball of progress and runs first. At this time, it's only the US, China and, to a lesser extent, the EEC who contend. The US, allied with the EEC can change the world. China and Russia know this. China, as usual, plays the long game while Russia grows impetuous, longing for the restoration of its Soviet Empire. Time is, however, short for this move to be made and, for the planet, it's already too late.
