Getting the film footage documenting the 850-mile migration of salmon from the Oregon coast to central Idaho looked to be in serious jeopardy after Kris Millgate nearly destroyed her main camera 200 miles into the trip.

Filmed last year, Millgates months-long project Ocean to Idaho, will premiere at the Colonial Theater at 7 p.m. Aug. 12. She will also have copies for sale of My Place Among Fish, a book chronicling the journey and some of her challenges while following the fish. There will also be a VIP Party starting at 5:30 p.m. For ticket information, go to

Im not in the film, she said. I decided to write a book to put in the back story of what its like to follow the fish from the ocean to Idaho. The book idea only sprouted in January.
Millgate said the film, just under half an hour long, was edited down from 25 hours of film and lays out the challenges for migrating Chinook salmon and issues surrounding the future of the endangered fish. Several stakeholders along the migratory route have a voice in the film. ... Theres a lot of footage that isnt in the show, she said. But whats in the show is the most important and the most beautiful. ... I was asked if I could make it an hour, but originally this was going to be 10 minutes.
