(15,084 posts)We were in New Zealand 30 years ago and went on a hike up to a glacier. We had brought a picnic lunch and sat on a large flat rock to eat and enjoy the view. A small flock of Kea parrots started stalking us. Made me nervous. I threw a few crackers in their direction. That was not what they wanted. They came closer. Closer. Finally, after I finished my apple, I tossed the core in their direction and they were happy. After lunch, we drove back towards our hotel and my husband wanted to stop to take a panoramic picture. He left the driver's side window open when he exited the car. In a very few minutes, I found myself eye-to-eye with another Kea perched on the wing mirror. I was afraid it would jump in the car. Fortunately my husband returned before I had a seat mate.
Later, we heard a tale of a traveler in the area (near Milford Sound) whose car broke down on the road. He parked at the side of the road and lifted the hood to warn other drivers. He hitchhiked back to town and when he returned to his car, the parrots had picked off virtually all of the rubber hoses, belts, etc from his engine. They trashed his car!
This GoPro video is much more entertaining!
