How a floating hydrogen farm has moved China closer to clean renewable energy
South China Morning Post | Zhang Tong in Beijing | 6 Jun, 2023
A team of Chinese researchers has moved a step closer in the quest for clean, renewable energy by converting seawater into hydrogen and oxygen.
The offshore platform development that harnessed both wind and solar power in the first successful attempt to use seawater without the need for desalination was led by researcher Xie Heping from Shenzhen University and the state-owned Dongfang Electric Corporation.
The platform dubbed Dongfu Number One is anchored in the waters of southeastern China off the coast of Fujian province and is capable of withstanding high waves and gusts up to force 8 on the Beaufort scale...
...The 63 square metre (678 sq ft) platform combines a hydrogen production system with a stable offshore wind power supply system. By combining the two components, the researchers created an environmentally friendly floating farm that electrolyses seawater into hydrogen without creating undesirable side effects or pollution...more

Hydrogen-powered transport: Hong Kong lags in adoption but can still lead in innovation, says refuelling-station investor.
Company is bankrolling the citys first hydrogen-refuelling station, slated for completion around September as Citybus readies for bus trials
SCMP | 20 Jun, 2023
Hong Kong has the potential to be a leader in hydrogen utilisation, as we can afford to adopt the best in the world, said David An, chairman of Hans Energy, noting that the city has some of the worlds most stringent quality requirements for buses. [Mainland] China has many hydrogen buses, but they are completely different from ours, which are built to European Union standards.
Hydrogen fuel enjoys strong policy support in Hong Kong, where transport accounts for a fifth of carbon emissions. The governments 2023-24 budget provides HK$200 million (US$25.6 million) for trials of double-decker buses and heavy vehicles powered by hydrogen fuel cells, which generate zero roadside emissions. And Chief Executive John Lee Ka-chiu said last October that the government will formulate long-term strategies for the application of hydrogen energy in road transport by 2025...more

(22,456 posts)... that the U.S. is WAY behind everyone else in the research and development of the non-CO2 energy market.
If I'm wrong, please correct me, but if I'm right, let's find out why that is and FIX it.
Are we just willing victims of the oil companies?
Or do our leaders WANT our future generations to be beholden to some other country just as we have been beholden to the oil countries all these years?

(1,289 posts)One possible answer is the PETRO-DOLLAR
For years Washington DC did not WANT any alternatives to the status quo- because it would upset the financial apple cart.
I don't know the actual answer anymore than anyone else looking in but that's one theory.
Also, as stated earlier, it seems to me that some (many?) do not really want true energy independence - for ANYONE or ANY NATION.
That comes not from me but from a "Father" of hydrogen in the US - Mike Strizki who's house was written up in Scientific American in 2008- "Inside the Solar Hydrogen House"

(22,456 posts)I did see that video years ago and was intriqued by the work he did with his house. It was obviously a demonstration site and it was clear that the systems could be simplified to fit right into a more 'real world' home, but his work has shared so much information to a public that really has no idea of what any of this is about.
I guess I'm just at a loss about why, with so many clear and solid warnings from scientists who do know what's going on, why we are still not moving full speed ahead on the transition away from fossil fuels that we must make, the sooner the better.
It's surreal to me that we, as a nation and as the human population, are dragging our feet on this. Mind-boggling.
