New green hydrogen fuel to power Beijing buses
chinadaily.com.cn | 2025-05-27
In a significant step towards decarbonizing its transportation sector, CHN Energy Guohua Energy Investment Co Ltd has recently delivered a shipment of high-purity green hydrogen from its plant in Hebei province to a Sinopec refueling station in Beijing, powering the city's hydrogen fuel cell buses and underscoring the nation's commitment to a sustainable energy future.
The development of renewable hydrogen, often termed green hydrogen, is considered a crucial component of China's strategy to achieve its dual carbon goals of peaking emissions before 2030 and achieving carbon neutrality by 2060.
Green hydrogen is produced through the electrolysis of water powered by renewable energy sources such as solar and wind, resulting in virtually zero greenhouse gas emissions during its production. This contrasts with grey hydrogen, which is produced from fossil fuels, and blue hydrogen, where carbon emissions from fossil fuel-based production are captured and stored.
The collaboration between CHN Energy Guohua Energy Investment and Sinopec, Asia's largest refiner, signifies a strengthening of the green hydrogen supply chain within the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei economic zone, it said...more

(37,528 posts)1. Hydrogen in China is not "green," and all the lying in the world will not make it so.
Every time the fossil fuel greenwashing industry pushes this line of bullshit about hydrogen in China with a dishonest slick video, I'll repost it again.
Subsidizing Grid-Based Electrolytic Hydrogen Will Increase Greenhouse Gas Emissions in Coal Dominated Power Systems Liqun Peng, Yang Guo, Shangwei Liu, Gang He, and Denise L. Mauzerall Environmental Science & Technology 2024 58 (12), 5187-5195
The text is clear enough.
From the introductory text:
... Currently, nearly all hydrogen in China is either produced directly from fossil fuels (55% from coal gasification and 14% from steam methane reforming (SMR)) or as a byproduct of petroleum refining (28%), with only 1% coming from water electrolysis. (2) Producing 1 kg of coal- or SMR-based hydrogen emits roughly 19 and 10 kg of CO2, respectively. (3) In 2020, hydrogen production from fossil fuels in China emitted approximately 322Tg of CO2, equivalent to 25% of total CO2 emissions from industrial processes, a number expected to rise with increasing hydrogen demand. (4) Industrial processes include production of nonmetallic mineral products, chemical, and metal products, as well as production and consumption of halocarbons and sulfur hexafluoride. (4)
