I know Zeihan is often hyperbolic but I'm not knowledgeable enough to say whether what he says in this video is accurate or not. Could someone more wise than me weigh in, please?.

(53,559 posts)Maybe if the world's population is old, governments won't have the personnel to have shooting wars so often. Instead, the violence is in our neighborhoods, at least in the US.

Also built in is that "reducing the number of children to support the older generations" was always going to cause "a breakdown". Yes, declining populations around the globe is happening ( look at Russia, Japan, etc ). Our population is only increasing due to immigration, which Trump is trying to reverse. Yes, this means the old model is not sustainable. However, it doesn't mean a global depression is on the way... just a change in how we address things ( like housing, energy production, etc ). It may not be that we need an ever increasing population of working age adults and consumers to maintain a healthy economy.
Is there risk ahead... yup. Climate change is still happening. Humans have only flourished on this planet in times that have been favorable to our agriculture. Change that and we run the risk of starving 90 percent of the planet. We have yet to see the impacts of Climate Change. I don't know if we have time ( or will ) to not only slow it down, but reverse it to the point where we control the climate.

(5,492 posts)Huge swaths of the populated world will have numerous lethal days where the body's ability to cool by sweating can't occur. Those conditions are coming to here in the USA one of these summers, very soon. And it will be most of the USA if any amount of that trapped Methane Hydrates in the Arctic Ocean releases. The melting point of that stuff is rapidly approaching, we can easily face a total civilizational collapse if we get runaway warming over say one summer. We also are in for another year of large mass ejections from the Sun which can destroy much of our electronics on the side of the Earth which gets hit. The world is littered with abandoned cities after much milder changes.
