Super El Nio forecast strengthens--what it could mean for US winter

A developing El Niño climate pattern is now forecast to become significantly stronger than previously expected, with some forecasters warning it could be one of the most intense events on record, significantly reshaping weather conditions across the United States through late 2026 and into 2027.

El Niño is a naturally occurring climate pattern in the tropical Pacific, which recurs every two to seven years, where weakened trade winds and shifting currents periodically push sea surface temperatures above normal.

Once established, it can reshape weather worldwide by altering atmospheric circulation—influencing temperatures, rainfall and storm tracks across continents.

Why the Forecast Has Strengthened

Forecast confidence has increased because, according to the National Weather Service (NWS), ocean temperatures across the central and eastern equatorial Pacific continue to warm—a hallmark of El Niño conditions.
