Monday, Google made waves and kick-started an exodus by cutting ties with the American Legislative Exchange Council. The reason, according to Google chairman Eric Schmidt? The free market lobbying group is just literally lying about climate change.
Unfortunately for ALEC, its no longer fashionable to be a climate denier, or to promote climate denial. And its proving to be a rather unprofitable position as well. This has put the group in the rather awkward position of having to defend its belief in climate change. Yeah, its not going so well.
EDIT
Thursday, ALEC upped its game, releasing a position statement on renewables and climate change. Again, it tries to make the case for free market environmentalism while insisting its not a climate denier organization. Again, it gets caught in its own lies. In the statement, ALEC tries to claim that it doesnt advocate for the teaching of climate denial in schools. Its model Environmental Literacy Improvement Act, adopted in classrooms across the country, might not teach climate denial outright, but it does encourage teachers to give climate skeptics and deniers a voice, in order to provide students with a balanced view of the science. In practice, of course, that doesnt turn out looking like how a balanced debated between the 97 percent majority and the climate-denying minority should.
ALEC also tries to get out of claims that it opposes legislative or regulatory action that addresses climate change, even though its been clearly, and firmly, opposed to the EPAs clean power plan. Its twisted reasoning? Nowhere in the EPA plan, ALEC claims, does it say what the climatic benefits of limiting emissions from coal-fired power plants would be. Of course, the EPA plan is all about climate change. The legislation is entirely based on the agencys finding, in 2009, that key greenhouse gases in the atmosphere threaten the public health and welfare of current and future generations because of their contribution to global warming.

(45,251 posts)ALEC can lie all it wants. And environmentalists can tell the truth all they want.
But, look to your Mayors, town councils, state houses and Washington, D.C. for no legislation, weak legislation or bad legislation on this issue. Treaties, too. And that is where the rubber hits the road.

(12,977 posts)That's what makes them so dangerous. I was surprised to see them described in the excerpt as a lobbying group -- because the last I knew they were a non-profit that had to strenuously deny they were engaged in lobbying (even when they were). Maybe they've dropped that pretense. But either way, their real function is to turn right-wing think-tank position papers into bills at the state level and pass them along to their members.

(128,738 posts)All the major RW lunatic-fringe legislation passed in GOP-controlled states was drafted by ALEC (and adapted to fit into or bend itself around that state's Constitution).
I recall a few years ago going through the site and the subject matter legislation that they created, which is still openly available for anyone to see here -

Plenty of crap there related to their complete disinterest in the environment.

(45,251 posts)I am not saying ALEC is a good organization by any means.
But, what really makes ALEC so dangerous to us is that the people whom we elect, and the people appointed by those we elect, the people whose salaries and perks and expenses come out of our pocket, do the bidding of ALEC. If not, ALEC would just be wasting its time and money writing legislation and trying to buy politicians.

The politicians that support ALEC are despicable excuses for elected officials.
They are by definition anti-American !!!!!!!!
ALEC is trying to crush unions.
ALEC is trying to control our educational system by dictating curriculum and buying universities and their professors.
ALEC is rewriting history. The books from Texas are filled with lies, distortions, and omissions.
ALEC and their member corporations are tax dodgers.
ALEC and their member corporations are environmental terrorists.
ALEC and their member corporations are economic and environmental terrorists.
In a just world they would be charged, prosecuted, and incarcerated.

Expose ALEC, expose the Koch's fascist agenda, the election is ours.
The destruction of ALEC is something to be devoutly wished. Hopefully, more and more corporations will leave. Doubtful but certainly hoped

What ALEC peddles is radical right wing cut and paste legislation. They can't sell that shit without lying.

(45,984 posts)First of all, from the information in the article, it would appear that Dave and Charlie Koch are actively lying, not merely willfully ignorant, about climate change. One cannot discount the willful ignorance of a couple of Birch-bred ignorami, since a person who believes that Ike was Communist or that the fluoridation of drinking water is a subversive plot is likely to believe anything.
However, since many fossil fuel magnates who promote the climate-science-is-a-hoax hoax are also inheritance brats who attended Ivy League universities where they probably learned something besides deviousness, sociopathology and ridiculous, unsustainable economic theories, it is difficult to believe that the whole fucking lot of them are so stupid as to question the conclusions of 97% of scientists.
What they are doing is lying to the public in an attempt to keep their businesses on life support.
They profess to believe in the free market, but ALEC crafted model legislation to tax homeowners with the audacity to install solar panels on the roofs belies this. This is nothing less than an attempt to strangle the competition in the crib.
They think coal and oil corporations are too big to fail. Actually, they're just too big for their breeches.
We need to supplant -- not supplement, but supplant -- fossil fuel with renewable energy sources in the next few decades. Fossil fuel is unhealthy. If you don't think so, take it from somebody who uses to drive past the Cheveron refinery between Richmond, California and the Carquinez Strait on a regular basis. Just smelling that place will make a person sick. If you don't live near an oil refinery, just go fill up you car at a gas station. Smelling a gas station will make you sick, too.
We didn't really need climate science to tell us that fossil fuel consumption was bad for public health. However, it's not just a threat to public health. It's a threat to life on Earth, and that is not an exaggeration.
Dave and Charlie are old men and will soon go to that great blazing fossil fuel source under the earth, and their final years will spent being reminded that karma can be very, vary nasty.
