Leading climate scientists and advisors stand accused of giving the public false hope that dangerous levels of warming can be averted. Thats the view of Oliver Geden, a researcher at the Berlin-based German Institute for International and Security Affairs.
Writing in the latest edition of Nature, Geden says government advisors are under pressure to offer solutions that can keep warming within what is deemed acceptable levels.
Scientific advisers must resist pressures that undermine the integrity of climate science, he writes. Instead of spreading false optimism, they must stand firm and defend their intellectual independence, findings and recommendations no matter how politically unpalatable.

So it looks like what the RW calls "alarmists" are actually painting an overly optimistic picture under pressure from politicians.
Long and short of it: It's a lot worse than people realize. Tuck your head between your legs and kiss your ass goodbye.

We have 12 acres of land, with mixed hardwoods & red, white & jackpines. On any given day we may see deer, turkeys, sandhill cranes, coyotes, etc. as well as the usual run of cotttontails, chipmunks, both red & gray squirrels & other small mammals. I have seen one badger and a few martens on our land. Our bird feeders service everything from pileated woodpeckers to chickadees.
I grew up in the pineries of N. WI and spent much of my free time since childhood in the woods. but we figure that our pine trees are among the living dead, as are the white birch & probably the balsam firs. We figure the maples will last a little longer, & the oaks are pretty resistant to climate extremes--if oak wilt or something doesn't get them.
I have a deep and abiding attachment to the natural world, and I just despair at what awaits us.
