Politico investigates how enviros are beating back coal:

Politico investigates how enviros are beating back coal:

“Beyond Coal isn’t the stereotypical Sierra Club campaign … it usually wins by arguing that ditching coal will save ratepayers money … Sierra Club finds itself in foxholes with big-box stores, manufacturers and other business interests, fighting coal upgrades that would jack up electricity bills, pushing for cheaper renewables and energy efficiency instead.”

What the Sierra Club is doing is brilliant. They end up with businesses like Wal-Mart fighting alongside them against local coal plants because they can show that eliminating the coal plants will lower electricity rates.

At the end of the article it talks about how, once they've won against coal, the next step is to go after big oil. This will be a bigger fight but they'll have a new and powerful ally at that point. Replacing gasoline and diesel with electricity will benefit their former enemies, the now greener electric companies, who will obviously benefit from a switch to electric vehicles.
