NRC says near final vote on Scana reactor(s)

The U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission is "very close" to a final decision on an application led by Scana Corp. for two new nuclear reactors in South Carolina, NRC Chairman Gregory Jaczko said Wednesday.

Jaczko, speaking to a House Apppropriations Committee panel, said "it's certainly not months" before a decision will be made on the application to expand the Virgil C. Summer plant.

Earlier this year, the NRC approved the first new reactor license in decades. It is expected also to approve the Scana application, which uses the same reactor design from Toshiba Corp. unit Westinghouse Electric Co.
