UK's Cameron battles his own party as Brexit row focuses on Turkey

Chief 'In' campaigner Prime Minister David Cameron clashed with members of his own party on Sunday over the impending referendum on Britain's European Union membership, dismissing claims that he would be powerless to stop Turkey joining the EU.

Cameron is leading the campaign to keep Britain inside the EU ahead of the June 23 referendum, the outcome of which will have far-reaching consequences for the country's economy, its role in world trade and its global diplomatic status.

But many in his Conservative Party, including several cabinet ministers, are campaigning to leave the bloc, raising the prospect that a long-standing rift over Europe could become a permanent split and threaten Cameron's ability to govern after the vote.

'Out' campaigners sought to seize the initiative on Sunday by focusing on immigration, one of the most emotive issues in the Brexit debate, after six out of the last seven polls in the last week showed the Remain campaign in the lead.

Yes, Cyprus. They keep trying to ignore that. And Greece for that matter. bemildred May 2016 #2

However desirable it may be to get Turkey into the EU it probably won't happen in my lifetime. Cyprus being the number 1 bone of contention.

It's just not going to be a happy family.

I see lots of blatant lying and just plain venting from all sides. People get worked up. But you should see the stuff that goes over here. I have noticed that the Brexit side has gotten a bit overwrought lately like you say.

I can't say I envy you the choice either, it's going to be disruptive either way.

Voting to remain means things stay pretty much as they are.

Voting to leave will make things considerably worse.

The EU is not perfect, but the single market is a huge benefit to this country. One that many people take for granted.

I think supranational organizations have a necessary place in modern society, but they derive their power from the consent of the governed in the same ways that a democratic nation does, and so there needs to be a lot more transparency and accountability, and better governance too. Just like here. Or things will continue to decay. The plutocrats need to wake up and smell the coffee.

But I do see your point. Bernie doing Sampson in the Temple here on the Democratic Party would be analogous, satisfying for a short while, but not likely to improve the situation much.

We do have real, global issues to address, and we better too.

But we can't achieve that reform if we leave the EU. We would just lose our say in matters.
