EU Envoy to Turkey Resigns After Less Than a Year

ISTANBUL — The European Union's top envoy to Turkey has resigned, less than a year into the job, after falling out with officials in Ankara at a critical juncture in EU-Turkey relations.

The EU delegation in Ankara said Tuesday that Ambassador Hansjoerg Haber, a German career diplomat, was leaving his post, without giving any reason. The spokeswoman for EU foreign affairs and security policy confirmed he would leave the position on Aug. 1.

"All the necessary steps are being taken to swiftly appoint a new ambassador," Maja Kocijancic said.

Turkey's recently appointed minister for EU affairs, Omer Celik, said there was no point in Haber continuing to serve in Turkey because he had caused offense at the highest level.

The European Union's ambassador to Turkey violated basic rules of diplomacy in showing disrespect to Turkey's values and its president, Ankara's EU Minister, Omer Celik, said on Tuesday.

"There are two rules any diplomat should know, first is respect for a country's values, and second is respect for that country's president. The ambassador violated these basic rules," Celik told reporters in Bratislava, Slovakia, in comments broadcast live on Turkish television.

The EU's envoy to Turkey, Hansjoerg Haber, has resigned, EU officials said on Tuesday, a further sign of strained relations as Brussels tries to keep a deal credited with curbing the flow of illegal migrants to Europe on track.
