U.K. Labour Party Offers Sharp Left Turn in Leaked Election Manifesto
By STEPHEN CASTLE MAY 11, 2017
A draft manifesto leaked online on Thursday offers a window into how Britains opposition Labour Party, which is trailing in the polls, plans to shore up its core vote in the general election next month by offering its most left-wing platform in more than three decades.
Opening stark political dividing lines with the governing Conservative Party, Labours
43-page manifesto, published by The Daily Mirror, The Daily Telegraph, the BBC and other news outlets, includes some eye-catching policies likely to appeal to younger voters and the traditional supporters of the party, which is led by Jeremy Corbyn.
Among the proposals, discussed by about 80 members of a Labour committee on Thursday and to be officially released next week, are plans to renationalize some rail and energy companies, big increases in spending on health and social care, caps on energy prices, tax increases for higher earners and the abolition of university tuition fees.
A spokesman for Labour, reached by telephone on Thursday, declined to authenticate the document, saying the partys policy was not to comment on leaks. But Andrew Gwynne, Labours national elections and campaign coordinator, speaking to the BBC on Thursday morning, did not deny the documents authenticity.
