Kosovo President Thaci faces war crimes indictment
24 June 2020
Kosovo President Hashim Thaci has been accused of war crimes by a special international prosecutor in The Hague.
Mr Thaci and others "are criminally responsible for nearly 100 murders", torture and enforced disappearances, the prosecutor said.
The accusations - covering Kosovo's independence war against Serbia - are being assessed by a judge at the Kosovo Specialist Chambers who will decide if the case goes to trial.
Mr Thaci has denied any wrongdoing.
In its announcement, the Special Prosecutor's Office (SPO) said that, on 24 April, it had filed a 10-count indictment with the KSC "for the Court's consideration". It has not released details about the alleged war crimes.

A prosecutor investigating crimes committed during Kosovos 1998-99 independence war with Serbia has indicted Kosovos president, Hashim Thaçi, for crimes against humanity and war crimes.
The indictment was announced as Thaçi was on his way to Washington for a White House meeting with Serbias president organised by Richard Grenell, Donald Trumps controversial ambassador to Germany who was also appointed as the administrations Balkan peace envoy.
The meeting had been scheduled for Saturday, but Grenell announced on Twitter on Wednesday evening that Thaçi had cancelled his visit following the announcement. I respect his decision not to attend the discussions until the legal issues of those allegations are settled, Grenell wrote. Kosovos new prime minister, Avdullah Hoti, will represent the country at the White House meeting.
Hotis predecessor, Albin Kurti, accused Grenell of helping to bring down his government because it had resisted a US-backed deal with Serbia.
Trump is hoping to gain a diplomatic victory by brokering a deal between the two countries, which have not normalised relations since Kosovo broke away from Serbia following a Nato bombing campaign in 1999. Kosovo declared independence in 2008 but this is not recognised by Serbia. Nor is Kosovo a member of the UN or other major international bodies.

just for the court investigating possible crimes in Afghanistan and Israel. This is what you normally do to warlords or corrupt politicians in unreachable countries. The USA does not seemed to have stirred at this flagrantly illegal action. So, no, I don't think the ICC is going to be able to do much about Trump. If the American people are being isolationist, then Trump is their problem to deal with, and no one else's.

(14,118 posts)3. Well, now, the ICC could take steps just like we did when we impeached tRUMP. We knew it
wouldn't be effective but we had to do something and the steady chipping away will pay off...
