Israel-Iran Sea Skirmishes Escalate as Mine Damages Iranian Military Ship
The explosion came the same day as progress was reported in talks to revive the Iran nuclear deal, which Israel opposes.

An Iranian military vessel stationed in the Red Sea was damaged by an apparent Israeli mine attack on Tuesday in an escalation of the shadowy naval skirmishing that has characterized the two adversaries exchanges in recent years.
The damage to the vessel, which Iranian media identified as the Saviz, came as progress was reported on the first day of talks to revive American participation in the 2015 nuclear agreement between Iran and major world powers. Israel, which regards Iran as its most potent foe, strongly opposes a restoration of that agreement, which was abandoned by the Trump administration three years ago.
Several Iranian news outlets showed images of flames and smoke billowing from a stricken vessel in the Red Sea, but the full extent of the damage or any casualties was unclear.
The Saviz, though technically classified as a cargo ship, was the first vessel deployed for military use that is known to have been attacked in the Israeli-Iranian skirmishes.

Iran state TV acknowledges ship attacked in Red Sea

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates (AP) An Iranian cargo ship believed to be a base for the paramilitary Revolutionary Guard and anchored for years in the Red Sea off Yemen has been attacked, Iranian state television acknowledged Wednesday.
The state TV acknowledgment, citing foreign media, marks the first Iranian comment on the mysterious incident Tuesday involving the MV Saviz, suspected to have been carried out by Israel. The attack came as Iran and world powers sat down in Vienna for the first talks about the U.S. potentially rejoining Tehrans tattered nuclear deal, showing that challenges ahead dont rest merely in those negotiations.
The ships long presence in the region, repeatedly criticized by Saudi Arabia, has come as the West and United Nations experts say Iran has provided arms and support to Yemens Houthi rebels amid that countrys yearslong war. Iran denies arming the Houthis, though components found in the rebels weaponry link back to Tehran.
Iran previously described the Saviz as aiding in anti-piracy efforts in the Red Sea and the Bab el-Mandeb strait, a crucial choke point in international shipping.
In the state TV statement, an anchor cited a New York Times story, which quoted an anonymous U.S. official telling the newspaper that Israel informed America it carried out an attack Tuesday morning on the vessel. Israeli officials declined to comment Tuesday night about the incident when reached by The Associated Press.
