Japan has vowed to join the U.S. in defending Taiwan if it is invaded by China because - it said - Japan could be next.
Deputy prime minister Taro Aso said on Monday that such an event in Taiwan could pose a threat to the Japanese city of Okinawa, Kyodo news agency reported.
'If a major problem took place in Taiwan, it would not be too much to say that it could relate to a survival-threatening situation [for Japan],' Aso said at a fundraising party by a fellow Liberal Democratic Party lawmaker.
'We need to think hard that Okinawa could be the next,' Aso was quoted by Kyodo as saying.

One would think that the Kyodo news agency would know that.
Or perhaps it was "lost in translation."

According to The Japan Times, Asō "raised eyebrows" in June 2018 when he stated that the large support towards the LDP among voters under 35 in the 2017 general election was due to that demographic being less inclined than older Japanese to read newspapers, which had been critical of Abe's handling of cronyism scandals.[43]
In May 2018, Asō downplayed alleged sexual harassment charges against his ministry's top bureaucrat by saying that "there is no such thing as a sexual harassment charge."

Aso's family money came from wartime slave labor that included Allied POWs. He has consistently denied the truth of these matters.

Aso's comment about the Nazi method of doing away with constitutional law, is reflected in the Nippon Kaigi ultra right policy of calling for a suspension of the constitution in "emergency conditions"
Many speakers insisted on the emergency powers provision, and the declaration presented asserted that lack of provision for emergency powers is a fundamental flaw in the Constitution and deemed the provision of emergency powers an urgent task that would strengthen the governments authority in such situations. It called for an early motion for constitutional reform, as well as a popular referendum.

Taro Aso is a right wing nut. The English language press consistently apologizes for him pretending when he gets caught expressing his real thoughts, that it's some sort of gaffe rather than a true representation of his WWII denialist, make Japan great again fascist philosophy. Now ostensibly he's a "great statesman" because he favors jettisoning the old pacifist constitution.
Even if it traveled correctly, it depends on how they take it. The Government of Japan has been repeating nearly the same thing for a long time even after Mr. Koizumi became the Prime Minister. You are following up Prime Minister Koizumi's statement and as you know, we never say we will go to war again. In that sense, it is possible that even if our true intention travels correctly, they may not take it such a way. It is pretty difficult to answer your question.

Aso, along with Suga and Abe, is a member of the Ultra-right nationalist Nippon Kiagi
The group vigorously defends Japan's claim in its territorial dispute over the Senkaku Islands with China, and denies that Japan forced the "comfort women" during World War II.[16] Nippon Kaigi is opposed to feminism, LGBT rights, and the 1999 Gender Equality Law.[26]
