Afghanistan blast kills worshippers in Kunduz mosque
An explosion ripped through a mosque in northern Afghanistan, killing and wounding several people at Friday prayers in Kunduz province.
The cause and the number of casualties were not immediately clear. At least 100 people were killed or wounded, the Associated Press reported, citing a Taliban police official. Meanwhile, hospital sources told AFP news agency that at least 50 people had been killed in the blast.
The blast hit a mosque in the Khanabad district where members of the Shiite religious minority worship, a Taliban spokesman said.
“This afternoon, an explosion took place in a mosque of our Shiite compatriots … a number of our compatriots were martyred and wounded,” Zabihullah Mujahid said. He added that the militants had deployed “a special unit” to the site.
