Sudan: Army and paramilitary force claim control of key sites

Sudan's army and a notorious paramilitary force are battling with heavy weapons in the capital Khartoum as tensions erupt over a proposed transition to civilian rule.

The paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) says it has taken control of at least three airports, the army chief's residence and the presidential palace.

The army denies this and says its air force is attacking paramilitary bases.

Generals have been running the country, through what is called the Sovereign Council, since a coup in October 2021.

The RSF is under the command of the council's vice-president Gen Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo, while the army is led by its head, Gen Abdel Fattah al-Burhan.
