The majority of Americans supported the recent announcement by President Obama to use our military capabilities, other than boots on the ground, to degrade and destroy ISIS. To us, ISIS is a hateful organization that beheaded two Americans and just executed a British man. The methods they use are inhumane and barbaric. But our decision to enter a 'war' that will include other 'partners' does not consider that we could be seriously escalating the Arab/Moslem hate for us. They may, again, react against as exemplified by 9/11.

The Arabs/Moslems in the Middle East have been colonized and abused by imperial powers since the end of World War I. They have been divided and occupied by the British and French. The colonialists selected and instituted Arab ruling classes only to serve their interests. As the British and French were thrown out, despotic army generals replaced them. They suppressed and abused their citizens for over 50 years. During all that time, the Arab/Moslem people in the region had no say in what was being done to them. Although the Arabs are united by language, history, customs, past, aspirations and religion, they were never allowed to be free to select their rulers and to enjoy self-respect and dignity.

The Americans, interested in the region's energy resources, quickly replaced the outgoing British and French and became the supreme imperialist power in the region. The US is now trying to form a coalition with what remained of imperialist-imposed governments in Saudi Arabia, Jordan and other non-representative governments even including murderous government of Assad in Syria.

It is amazing that the American policy makers, including president Obama, cannot comprehend that Arabs and Moslems are people too. What they want is what every American wants: freedom, dignity, self-respect and some form of democracy where they can choose who controls their destinies. Forming a coalition to further control and suppress the Arabs/Moslems in the Middle East is the height of stupidity and lack of insight. ISIS is nothing but another facet of the attempt of the Arab/Moslems in the Middle East to reclaim some measure of freedom and dignity that has long been denied them. The methods they use are abhorrent to say the least, but the movement itself appears to have the tacit approval of the bulk of the Arabs and Moslems in the region. After all, decapitating two Americans, executing one British man and killing few thousands of Iraqis is disgusting, but it does not compare to the hundreds of thousands Iraqis, Afghanis "etc. we killed and maimed.

1. I don't agree that ISIS has the approval of people in the region.

They probably see them as foreign invaders.

But IMO this is the Iraqis' fight, it's their land and their culture on the line.

So I agree that we shouldn't add more foreign interlopers to the mix.
