Bibi on Romney: 'We did not know each other that well'

<snip>

"The historical fact of Bibi Netanyahu's and Mitt Romney's crossed paths at the Boston Consulting Group decades ago has been covered more extensively this cycle than it was in the 2008 presidential race, because of the implications of what a prior friendship could mean should the Republican become president after a term of strained relations between the Israeli leader and President Obama.

Romney had described their relationship as almost speaking "in shorthand" after years of knowing each other, and Netanyahu had seemed to bolster that through aides. But in an exclusive interview with Time magazine, Netanyahu seemed to tamp down the level of closeness:

“We did not know each other that well. He was the whiz kid. I was just in the back of the room.” Netanyahu tells Stengel he has seen Romney only a handful of times over the years and only once this year. They spoke for 10 minutes in March during his visit to Washington, mainly about Iran."

"Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney has significantly upped the ante for the Jewish vote with a planned trip to Israel, but US President Barack Obama is showing no signs of following suit.

A White House official told The Jerusalem Post Tuesday that “President Obama is not expected to make any more foreign travel before the election” in November.

The Romney campaign confirmed Monday that the former Massachusetts governor would soon be making a visit. While no dates have been given, it is likely that he will stop in Israel as part of a previously scheduled trip to London for the Olympic Games, which he is attending because of his role leading the Salt Lake City Olympics in 2002.

The Post first reported in May that Republican sources said Romney was planning to visit the Jewish state and meet with Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu, who worked with Romney in the United States when both were starting out their business careers."
