Palestinians attack US tourists mistaken as settlers
Palestinians attacked five US tourists driving in the flashpoint West Bank city of Hebron on Thursday, hurling a petrol bomb and rocks at their car, police said, apparently mistaking them for settlers.

The visitors, said by Israel's Channel 2 television to be students at a Jewish seminary in Brooklyn, were given refuge by a Palestinian man who sheltered them in his home until Israeli security forces arrived to escort them to safety, the police statement said.

It added that two of the young men were lightly injured and given first aid on the spot.

Channel 2 said the men's vehicle was torched only after they had abandoned it.

The men, wearing the skullcaps of observant Jews, were said to have inadvertently driven into the residential neighbourhood of Jebel Johar while searching for the nearby shrine known to Jews as the Cave of the Patriarchs and to Muslims as the Ibrahimi Mosque and revered by both.

Palestinian security sources said they were mistaken for Israeli settlers by the Palestinians.
That, in fact, is my point.

I'll be skipping Hebron and the Cave of the Patriarch's next month when I go to Israel. Also, with the State Department warning about the Golan Heights, we may just spend an extra half day in Safed and wander those wonderful streets instead.

Thanks and prayers to that Palestinian man who sheltered them. I hope he doesn't get killed for it.

I'll miss seeing the Cave - mostly because it's somewhere that is sacred to all those who follow Abrahamic religions and one of our group of four has never been there but it's not my first trip and I'll listen to the State Department warnings. There is so much to do and see there and having a "virgin" (he's never been to Israel at all) is exciting for all of us.

I havent been there since my son was inducted into the Army at the wall ....about 7 years ago .
He starts studying there in October ....he just found an apartment in the centre so went to help him move ....spent some time re discovering the old city .

Take my advice and steer clear of East Jerusalem to leftynyc......its not like it used to be .

I didnt have a problem inside the old city ....but American tourists like yourself especially if you are wearing religious headgear etc are a target .

Enjoy your trip ....stay safe .

I will certainly take it to heart. BTW - if you have any good restaurant recommendations - anywhere, not just Jerusalem, I would surely appreciate it. I've found the best way to start an argument is to ask who makes the best falafal in Jerusalem - everyone has a very strong opinion on that. Frankly, in NYC, the best falafal I've eaten is from the Rafiqi truck right outside my office.

The same people might have attacked Jewish tourists they thought were tourists, Israelis they thought were tourists, and of course Israelis theynthoughtnwere Israelis. The nature of the attack, culminating in injuries and a burned out car were not justified by anyone's identity. It was a penalty for driving while Jewish. Of course, the attackers were brutes acting outside the law, but they are not reflective of all Palestinians. For example, the man who sheltered them showed humanity. More of that needed from both sides and it should be applauded.

WATCH: Masked settlers attack Palestinians at Hebron checkpoint

Masked Israeli settlers attack, pepper spray Palestinians detained at the Beit Hadassah checkpoint in Hebron. Palestinian activist: ‘Had a Palestinian attacked the settlers, the entire neighborhood would have already been punished.’

By Yael Marom

A video released Saturday shows four settlers violently attacking two Palestinians who were detained by Israeli soldiers near the Beit Hadassah settlement in the city of Hebron.

According to the organization “Youth Against Settlements,” whose activists filmed the incident, two Palestinians were detained by Israeli soldiers near Beit Hadassah on Saturday, an area known for settler violence. The Palestinians began arguing with the soldiers when four settlers who were in the area intervened. According to the Palestinian activists, tempers began to flare and the four settlers went into Beit Hadassah, only to come out a few minutes later with their faces covered.

(see : video)

The video, shot by one of the YAS activists shows the masked settlers assaulting the Palestinians (one of the soldiers seems to be caught in the confrontation) and pepper spraying one of the Palestinians in his faces as he attempts to flee.

According to Israeli news site Walla!, the IDF claims that one of the detained Palestinians had been summoned for interrogation — most likely for throwing stones — and that the police force of the Judea and Samaria district has opened an investigation on the matter. Youth Against Settlements activist Issa Amro claims that the Palestinian arrested on Saturday is a tour guide who passes through the checkpoint on a regular basis. Amro told +972′s sister site, Local Call, that although the video of the attack was passed on to the police, not a single settler has been arrested. “The police said that arrests are made only after Shabbat,” Amro said, adding that he doesn’t understand why it is okay “to attack people on Shabbat, but not to arrest them on Shabbat.”

“Had a Palestinian attacked the settlers, the entire neighborhood would have already been punished,” added Amro. “All the Palestinians in the area would have been detained and the soldiers would have gone from home to home. If the police and the army won’t stop settler violence against Palestinians, their violence will only get worse. In the end it will only cause those who are routinely attacked to use violence against the settlers.”

Yael Marom is Just Vision’s public engagement manager in Israel and a co-editor of Local Call, where this article was originally published in Hebrew.
