When you push an entire population up against the wall, when you demonize them and trample their rights, [the situation] will explode in the end, the Israeli parliamentarian writes with no sense of irony.
Jewish Home MK Bezalel Smotrich, a member of Israels ruling coalition, penned an oped on Wednesday arguing that Jews cannot be terrorists. The two labels are mutually exclusive, he argued.
Terrorism is only violence carried out by our enemies in the framework of a war against us, Smotrich wrote in settler news outlet Arutz 7, us referring to Jews. (Hebrew) Anything else is a serious crime, a despicable crime, a nationalistic crime, but not terror.
The context of Smotrichs article is Israeli authorities draconian treatment of the suspects in the arson-murder of the Dawabshe family in Duma earlier this year, which senior politicians have called a Jewish terrorist attack. The suspects have been reportedly held in administrative detention, been prevented from meeting with their attorneys, and have subject to pressure in ways that likely violate their civil rights.
Right wing zionist Jewish Home never fails to outdo itself in the bigot area.

(3,967 posts)Justice Minister Ayelet Shaked on Thursday made a major departure from a past position she has held, telling Israel Radio that if there will be more terror attacks by Jews, we will also do house demolitions of Jews.
Until now, when Shaked has repeatedly been asked, including by The Jerusalem Post, about why it is legal for the state to demolish Palestinian terrorists houses, but not Jewish terrorists houses, she has answered there are not enough Jewish terrorists to justify the step, and stopped there.
On Thursday, Shaked echoed similar sentiments, but went a big step further in a way that might anger her right-wing constituency, in volunteering that theoretically the state might start to demolish Jewish terrorists houses in the future.
Shaked stated, "the justice system does not discriminate between blood and blood. The story of house demolitions is different because it's not a punishment, it's a step toward deterrence.

(4,462 posts)is an extremely controversial and largely fringe position originating mainly in academia, and discussed extensively here on DU. I am not surprised at all that someone altered.
I and most other believes such views provide a convenient excuse and rationalization for conduct and ideas we would find totally unacceptable in others. As an attorney who litigates some employment and other discrimination type matters, I find the entire concept troubling, and runs counter to actually eliminating racism. I also realize the law certainly does not make distinctions concerning unlawful actions based on race on whether the actor is black or anything else.
Similarly, although I'm Jewish and a strong Israel supporter, I fully acknowledge that the horrific historic and modern treatment of Jews across the world, particularly the pervasive Antisemitism in the Middle East, does not excuse certain actions of Jews that would otherwise be illegal. I do, however, become angered when Jews are judged by a double standard, with expectations not applied to anyone else.
