An Israeli-tested drug that tackles cancer through sophisticated manipulations of the bodys natural immune system was key in helping rid former US president Jimmy Carter of life-threatening tumors that developed after he was diagnosed with melanoma earlier this year.
Researched in Israel by Professor Jacob Schachter of the Ella Institute for melanoma treatment and research at the Sheba Medical Center in Tel Hashomer, Keytruda is part of a promising new class of drugs called immunotherapies, which harness the bodys immune system to help fight cancer.
The US-based Merck pharmaceutical companys injectable biotech drug works by blocking a protein found in certain tumors called PD-1, which inhibits the bodys natural response to cancer cells.
Carter, 91, announced Sunday that doctors found no evidence of the four lesions discovered on his brain this summer and no signs of new cancer growth. He revealed in August that he had been diagnosed with melanoma and had begun treatment, including surgery to remove part of his liver, targeted radiation therapy and doses of a recently approved drug to help his immune system seek out any new cancer cells.
(8,976 posts)there is almost no one I would more like to see that happen to.
Except that my younger brother died at 58 this August of the same types of cancer. He died in a hospice because "no existing treatment" offered any hope. Those medical folks did just what they would do for any medicare patient and I applaud their efforts. But what a shame that "all lives" don't equally matter.

Pembrolizumab was invented by Gregory Carven, Hans van Eenennaam and John Dulos at Organon Biosciences which later became Schering Plough Research Institute and then Merck & Co.[5] MRC Technology humanized the antibody pembrolizumab for Organon in 2006.
On September 4, 2014 the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved pembrolizumab under the FDA Fast Track Development Program. It is approved for use following treatment with ipilimumab, or after treatment with ipilimumab and a BRAF inhibitor in advanced melanoma patients who carry a BRAF mutation.[6] It is marketed by Merck.

Recent research in Israel, led by Prof. Jacob Schachter (Head of EllaInstitute, melanoma treatment and research, Sheba medical center, Tel Hashomer) successfully resulted in melanoma treatment. The drug, which has helped 50% of patients with metastatic melanoma with minimum side effects (in September 2014), was approved by the Ministry of Food and Drug Administration of America (FDA), under the accelerated procedure. Many experts suggest that this drug can lead to a real breakthrough in the treatment of cancer.

(14,851 posts)Israeli researchers have developed an entirely new approach towards fighting cancer - and a brand new drug that uses this approach with what appears to be amazing success.
The new approach is called immunotherapy and involves enhancing the body's natural immune systems to destroy the cancer cells. This is a 180 degree turn from contemporary methods like chemotherapy and radiation therapy, that seek to destroy the cancer cells and unfortunately usually end up destroying useful cells and even damaging organs, and producing harmful side effects as well.
Known as Keytruda, the drug that halted Ben-Shabbat's aggressive cancer is viewed today as the great hope for patients with metastatic melanoma, and just recently received US Food and Drug Administration approval. According to many experts in the field, Keytruda is likely to lead to a significant breakthrough in the treatment of cancer.

(25,699 posts)Not anything about Israel. I just hate headlines that try to claim a "cure for cancer!" - it's biologically and medically unsound sensation journalism. There is no "cure for cancer." Cancer is a complex of diseases and conditions with different causes, different effects, and different treatments. Even very similar forms of cancer can have wildly different responses to a given treatment, because they're still only similar.
Off-topic, I guess, I just loathe the "OMG CANCER CURE!" journalism.
