Israeli breakthrough helped cure Jimmy Carter’s cancer
An Israeli-tested drug that tackles cancer through sophisticated manipulations of the body’s natural immune system was key in helping rid former US president Jimmy Carter of life-threatening tumors that developed after he was diagnosed with melanoma earlier this year.

Researched in Israel by Professor Jacob Schachter of the Ella Institute for melanoma treatment and research at the Sheba Medical Center in Tel Hashomer, Keytruda is part of a promising new class of drugs called immunotherapies, which harness the body’s immune system to help fight cancer.

The US-based Merck pharmaceutical company’s injectable biotech drug works by blocking a protein found in certain tumors called PD-1, which inhibits the body’s natural response to cancer cells.

Carter, 91, announced Sunday that doctors found no evidence of the four lesions discovered on his brain this summer and no signs of new cancer growth. He revealed in August that he had been diagnosed with melanoma and had begun treatment, including surgery to remove part of his liver, targeted radiation therapy and doses of a recently approved drug to help his immune system seek out any new cancer cells.
while some research might have done in Israel to call it an Israeli breakthrough drug is a bit of a stretch

Pembrolizumab (formerly MK-3475 and lambrolizumab, trade name Keytruda is a humanized antibody used in cancer immunotherapy. It targets the programmed cell death 1 (PD-1) receptor The drug was initially used in treating metastatic melanoma.

Pembrolizumab was invented by Gregory Carven, Hans van Eenennaam and John Dulos at Organon Biosciences which later became Schering Plough Research Institute and then Merck & Co.[5] MRC Technology humanized the antibody pembrolizumab for Organon in 2006.

On September 4, 2014 the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved pembrolizumab under the FDA Fast Track Development Program. It is approved for use following treatment with ipilimumab, or after treatment with ipilimumab and a BRAF inhibitor in advanced melanoma patients who carry a BRAF mutation.[6] It is marketed by Merck.

Organon was a pharmaceutical company headquartered in Oss, Netherlands. In November 2007, Schering-Plough Corporation, based in New Jersey, USA, acquired Organon, active pharmaceutical ingredient producer Diosynth (separate from Organon until 2004),[1] and its veterinary pharmaceutical sister company Intervet from Akzo Nobel.[2] In November 2009, Schering-Plough merged with Merck & Co. under the name Merck & Co., known as Merck Sharp & Dohme or MSD outside the United States and Canada.

Keytruda – medicine which completely changes the approach to cancer treatment.

Recent research in Israel, led by Prof. Jacob Schachter (Head of “Ella”Institute, melanoma treatment and research, Sheba medical center, Tel Hashomer) successfully resulted in melanoma treatment. The drug, which has helped 50% of patients with metastatic melanoma with minimum side effects (in September 2014), was approved by the Ministry of Food and Drug Administration of America (FDA), under the accelerated procedure. Many experts suggest that this drug can lead to a real breakthrough in the treatment of cancer.

21. Breakthrough! Have The Israelis Developed A Cure For Cancer?
Fri Dec 11, 2015, 12:10 AM
Dec 2015

Israeli researchers have developed an entirely new approach towards fighting cancer - and a brand new drug that uses this approach with what appears to be amazing success.

The new approach is called immunotherapy and involves enhancing the body's natural immune systems to destroy the cancer cells. This is a 180 degree turn from contemporary methods like chemotherapy and radiation therapy, that seek to destroy the cancer cells and unfortunately usually end up destroying useful cells and even damaging organs, and producing harmful side effects as well.

Known as Keytruda, the drug that halted Ben-Shabbat's aggressive cancer is viewed today as the great hope for patients with metastatic melanoma, and just recently received US Food and Drug Administration approval. According to many experts in the field, Keytruda is likely to lead to a significant breakthrough in the treatment of cancer.

Not anything about Israel. I just hate headlines that try to claim a "cure for cancer!" - it's biologically and medically unsound sensation journalism. There is no "cure for cancer." Cancer is a complex of diseases and conditions with different causes, different effects, and different treatments. Even very similar forms of cancer can have wildly different responses to a given treatment, because they're still only similar.

Off-topic, I guess, I just loathe the "OMG CANCER CURE!" journalism.

oh and while we're here haven't you mentioned that you hold some medical position? I ask because I find it astounding that the what is routine in the testing of new drugs seems so foreign to you

Penn is Ivy League, Penn State has a strong though recently tainted football tradition.

Of course medical research is not done in a single institution, but looking at the various reports, it seems clear that Israel was the key player in this breakthrough, other institutions did bits and pieces.

now as to who did what you're entitled to your opinion albeit politically motivated IMO, your dig at BDS in the OP shows that and had it not been for that along with the nasty implication towards President Carter I would not have said a word

I think even those who disagree with Carter on Israel/Palestine issues respect what he has done with his life. Here's to his next chapter, eh?
