90% of Israeli Jews call themselves Zionists, Herzl Day poll finds

The vast majority of Israelis say Zionism is still relevant today and most define themselves as Zionists, according to a poll released by the Herzl Center Wednesday in honor of Herzl Day, celebrated on the Zionist thinker’s birthday.

Asked to what extent they define themselves as Zionists, with 10 being the most and one the least, about half (51 percent) of the poll’s respondents gave themselves a nine or 10 and 39% ranked themselves from five to eight. Only 11% of Israeli Jews gave themselves a score of one to four.

The vast majority of Israeli Jews – 82% – said the idea of Zionism is still relevant, while 9% were unsure and another 9% said Zionism is irrelevant.

3. I didn't find the poll figure for Israeli Arabs identifying with Zionism.

It would be interesting to see to what extent Israeli Arabs believe that Zionism is an ideology that includes them. In a democracy, it's important that minorities are included, and that they don't feel alienated.

Would a majority of Israeli Arabs also identify themselves as Zionists if they support a constitution that defined Israel as a Jewish and democratic state? Is Zionism an ideology that includes or excludes Israeli Arabs?

9. There's a reason why Palestinian citizens of Israel

virtually all want to remain citizens in the event of the creation of a Palestinian state, and routinely express their fears that their towns and villages might be part of any land traded or turned over to Palestinian rule.

One need only look around the geographic neighborhood, both historically and today, to realize that being governed by those dreaded Zionists is far, far better than all the alternatives, particularly if you're Palestinian. The current state of democracy and human rights under both the P.A. in the West Bank, and Hamas in Gaza, truly speaks for itself.

Among the specific results reported were that the percentage of Israeli Arabs who accepted Israel’s right to exist as a Jewish and democratic state rose to 52.8% from 47.4% the year before. There was a more pronounced rise in the percentage of Israeli Arabs who believe that Israel can exist as a Jewish majority state to 43.1% up from 29.6% a year earlier. The number of Israeli-Arabs who accept their identity as such without identifying as Palestinians increased from 32.5% in 2012 to 42.5% in 2013. In 2013, 63.5% of Israeli Arabs consider Israel to be a good place to live up from 58.5% in 2012.

How many Israeli Arabs consider themselves to Zionists? If they say they're nationalistic, do they mean that they're Zionists or something else?

There seems to be a difference in how Jewish and Arab Israelis identify their love for Israel, and what aspects of the Jewish and Democratic state they want to emphasize.

Or maybe I'm just on a fishing expedition...

....that pretty much obliterates all your notions of Apartheid, Zionism = Racism, or Adalah's list of 50 bullshit.

Goes to show Israel's Arabs think a lot more highly of the Jewish state than you or any anti-zionist BDS'ers do, but of course you all know what's best for them (colonial mentality).

16. I have a suspicion that Zionism in Israel doesn't include Israeli Arabs,

and that Zionism isn't an ideology that most Israeli Arabs identify with and support.

While all the polls of Israeli Arabs seem to indicate that it's indeed the case, it's not conclusive, as the Jewish/Zionist issue is always conflated with democracy, so it's not easy to see to what degree Israeli Arabs support Zionism/Jewish state as opposed to democracy.


This is not about any claims of Apartheid, that's in another thread.
