Sexual assault epidemic in Gaza

In a society where women are encouraged to hide, molestation of boys increases.

See the bacha bazis of Afghanistan.

Sexual assault epidemic in Gaza

Over 650 cases a year of sexual assaults on children are reported to a Palestinian NGO; most assaults go unreported, 'hidden because of the weight of tradition and culture of shame'

Life has turned into a nightmare for Fatma’s family since her eldest son, 11, was sexually assaulted, a trauma which has damaged them all and forced them to move house.

Fatma’s family is one of the rare victims who speak out on a taboo issue in the conservative Gaza Strip and to bring the case to court. “Even though they are part of the family, I asked for the death penalty,” she said.

Gazan society, in which tradition has always played a major role, has turned in on itself further since the Islamist movement Hamas won 2006 elections and took sole control of the territory the next year after deadly clashes with the rival secular Fatah.

Amazing how the "progressives" support this regime... Especially the vocal minority in this DU group who turn a blind eye to this fucking hate.

Some of us don't drink that kind of Kool-Aid. This problem has nothing to do with Islam.

Orthodox Jews to a common cause than three different ones. As it is now, it's possible to summarize your argumentation as "Muslims are bad, m'Kay", which leads to nowhere when it comes to identifying the causes and solving the issue.

I find your argumentation faulty on two levels - first, it seems to be an attempt to demonize an ethnic group, and secondly, it's not logical to attribute what is evidently a false cause to the problem.

7. I just don't believe that the behavior of oppressive religious goverments are caused by Islam.

There are governments in Muslim countries that are different than the one in Gaza, and there are historical examples of oppressive religious governments that were not Muslim. Hence, the linkage in the OP is false.

Anything that Islam is accused of, could probably be used to accuse any other religion or ideology. Things wouldn't have been better in Gaza if Hamas were Christian fundamentalists or ultra Maoist fanatics.

And I'll ask again , which Muslim countries are you referring to that are safe for Gays?

Turkey used to be but no longer and even Amsterdam now , a leader in Gay rights in the past , is no longer safe for Gays.

15. That's not really what I meant.

Currently, I don't know of any Muslim country (except Israel) that promotes or tolerates LGBTs. At best, the situation in some Muslim countries would be like the US in the 60's, which isn't particularly good.

My point is that it's not Islam in itself that is the cause for this. I've argued my point elsewhere in this thread, and I'm not going to repeat it.

And I know nothing about Gay rights in the Netherlands - I've been there, but didn't see anything out of the ordinary in that aspect.

17. With a Christian Arab Miss Trans Israel

http://tribune.com.pk/story/1112382/israels-first-transgender-beauty-pageant-unites-muslims-christians-jews/

Israel’s first transgender beauty pageant, won by a Christian Arab on Friday, brought together contestants from the Holy Land’s main faiths in an unconventional show of tolerance and coexistence.

In what organisers described as an ethnic “mosaic”, the 12 vying for the Miss Trans Israel 2016 crown included a Jewish confectioner from an Orthodox Jerusalem family, a Muslim belly-dancer from Tel Aviv and a Christian ballerina from Nazareth.

The Christian, Taleen Abu Hanna, won and will represent Israel at the Miss Trans Star International pageant in Barcelona in September – a role she will evidently relish.

“Our country deserves to come out on top,” Abu Hanna, 21, told journalists. “Our country allowed me, a Christian Arab from Nazareth, to end the war between my soul and my body. So if it made peace for me, our country is only a country of peace.”

(almost thinking this deserves its own thread)

And I would also point out that the epidemic of child abuse among the Haredim has everything to do with Judaism.

And the Catholic priest abuse scandal had everything to do with Christianity.

12. I'm sorry - I think I'll just have to disagree with you.

While I'm personally not too fond of organized religion, I don't see it as the most proximate cause for abuse. So, no, I don't believe it was the Catholic Christian faith that led to centuries of priestly abuse of kids. I'd rather blame the power structure of the Catholic Church which encouraged abuse. It's more or less the same with the Jewish and Muslim examples of similar abuse.

Many people use religion as their moral compass, and would never abuse anyone. I have no intention of blaming their faith for something they're not guilty of.
