Israel's most right-wing government agreed under Benjamin Netanyahu

A new government seen as the most right-wing in Israel's history has been agreed, sealing Benjamin Netanyahu's return to power.

Mr Netanyahu, who won elections in November, is set to serve an historic sixth term as prime minster.

His coalition contains far-right parties, including one whose leader was once convicted of anti-Arab racism.

Palestinians fear the new government will also strengthen Israel's hold on the occupied West Bank.

"I have managed [to form a government]," Mr Netanyahu tweeted, just minutes before a midnight local time (22:00 GMT) deadline set by the Israeli President, Isaac Herzog.

we have gone from Israeli government condemning Baruch Goldstein, to a government consisting of people that praise Goldstein, think he was a hero.

It is a travesty.

Netanyahu Gets a Political Crisis - and a Personal Message - From the High Court

By insisting he will not resign his ministry, Arye Dery has rolled a live grenade at the feet of the prime minister.

Arye Dery actually called the score in advance – 10 to 1. He rightly foresaw that 10 of the 11 justices hearing the appeals against his appointment would instruct Benjamin Netanyahu to fire him, and that Justice Yosef Elron will remain in the minority opinion.

This was the reason that in the days preceding the verdict’s publication, senior Shas figures made explicit threats, aimed at Netanyahu too: If Dery won’t be a minister, there will be no government.

The prime minister and his partner understand well that they are now in a very tangled legal and political bind. To them, the verdict is an almost insurmountable obstacle. Or as a senior legal observer put it, “they locked them up on all sides, and threw the key down a well.”
