60% of Americans back reevaluating ties with Israel if judicial reform passes - poll

Similar figure thinks Washington should critique Jerusalem over planned legislation; Israelis acknowledge need to consider US opinions on some matters, but not all

23 May 2023.

Most Americans think that Washington should reassess its ties with Israel if Jerusalem passes a controversial, drastic overhaul of the judiciary, according to a survey that examined opinions in both counties on the ties between them.

According to the poll, presented at the Herzliya conference by Amnon Cavari of The Institute for Liberty and Responsibility at Reichman University on Monday, 60 percent of Americans back a reevaluation of the bilateral relationship if the overhaul is legislated.

A similar number said the US should critique Israel over the plan, though there were sharp divisions between Republicans and Democrats on the issue.

The Gallup poll found that while most Israelis accept that Jerusalem should take into consideration Washington’s opinion on some matters, that does not extend to all issues, including military operations.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s government is pushing the overhaul plan, which it says is needed to rein in an over-intrusive High Court of Justice. Critics say the reforms will sap the court of its ability to act as a check and balance to the executive and legislative branches, dangerously damaging Israel’s democratic character.

How much do we give Israel yearly in aid $330 billion and they have national healthcare and not sure if universities are subsidized or are they free. And i always bring up to my evangelical associates Israel allows abortion and they don’t think Jesus is the savior so what is your obsession with them you think God gonna ok you because you support Israel.

Bibi's party got only 32% of Israel's votes. There are dozens of parties in Israel, and only 13 of them got enough votes to get representation in the 120-member Knesset. These 13 parties form coalitions. Whichever coalition gets the support of more than half of the 120 Knesset membership, gets to form a government.

Bibi's coalition of far-right parties and alliances has a total of 62 Knesset seats. They, and not the Israeli voters, are the ones who put Bibi in power. It was not a direct election that put him there. It is clear, there is no "them" who put him in power.

American right wingers fully understand the importance of supporting their ideological allies in Israel. Rather than calling for punishing the entire country for the current regime, whatever it may be at any given moment, they understand that the balance of power in Israel is only a matter of a few votes. They reward their allies to facilitate their victories.

Sadly, America's left wing doesn't seem to get this, and insists on wholesale punitive actions for the entire country when the right wing is in control of government. This, of course, foments resentment among general population of Israel, not just its right wing. I keep wondering how long the American left can keep shooting themselves in the foot before they start supporting Israel's left and center-left politicians, the only ones who can bring an end to the right-wing control of the Israeli government.

So clearly Israelis across the political spectrum overwhelmingly support the US and it's role in the Middle East, and support the Biden administration's foreign policy.

Trump is nothing but a side show, Israeli, he'll be in jail soon, unlike Bibi.

Bibi is a politician who doesn't know his time is up. The corruption charges are Bush league compared to Trump.

Your comparison is ridiculous, and frankly offensive.

I have long thought we needed to reduce our handouts to this country that in effect elected their own version of tfg, complete with all the criming and grifting, and who is glad to interfere with American politics to push right wing lies and punish Democrats. Judicial reform just shows how far the right wing (little murderer) is willing to go to seize all the reins of power.
