Abbas To UN: Israeli Policies Leading To 'New Nakba;' Recognize Palestine Before It's Too Late
By Barak Ravid, Chemi Shalev and Reuters
7:28 P.M. Abbas: I call upon you to prevent a new Nakba in the holy land. Support an independent state of Palestine before it is too late. 7:25 P.M. Abbas: There is no homeland for us but Palestine. We shall not except an alternative land. 7:24 P.M. Abbas says we want the General assembly of the UN to consider recognizing Palestine as a non member state. 7:23 P.M. Abbas: Hasn't the time come to undo this injustice? The Palestinian people is saying - we shall not allow a new Nakba. 2. I guess if you want a peaceful resolution
throwing terms like Nakba out there aren't going to help much.

6. True. Maybe he should accuse Israel of genocide....
...while he's at it.
It's about as credible a claim. |

3. Obama rightfully called once again for a two-state solution that guarantees the security of Israel
and permits the prosperity of the Palestinians.
What is so hard about that? Obama called for those from both sides who are willing to compromise and who want peace to join him in working for peace. What is so difficult about that? I think that Obama's speech was right on target on this issue. It will take a willingness to view peace as the goal, security and prosperity as more important than "winning" or getting what you want. |

5. More of the same shit. Abbas the attention whore...
...is just pissed that Palestine has taken a big backseat to the Arab Winter going on all around him.
It's so bad, he's peddling theories of Jews doing the ethnic cleansing thing.... Who takes this shit seriously? |

7. The new Nakba is Area C the 60% of the West Bank under Israeli control
Israel froze planning in Palestinian towns and villages. The existing planning schemes, which date back fifty years and more, serve as the basis for approval - more often rejection - of applications for building permits. Land registration has been frozen for thirty years, making it easy to deny applications for permits on the grounds of failure to prove ownership of the land. Israel administers the building authorities, which have no Palestinian representation. A Palestinian wanting to obtain a building permit to build on his land in Area C [that part of the West Bank which remains under complete Israeli control] must undergo a prolonged, complicated, and expensive procedure which generally results in denial of the application.
In this situation, and with no option, many Palestinians are compelled to build without a permit. The construction is not a political act or an act of protest. Rather, the construction is the only way left to them to provide housing for themselves and their families. Rather than change this situation, Israel has adopted a policy of mass demolition of Palestinian houses. In the past ten years, the authorities have demolished more than 2,200 residences, leaving more than 13,000 Palestinians homeless. This policy continues today in Area C. http://www.btselem.org/topic/planning_and_building |
